Chapter Eleven

SHALANNA

Shalanna woke up with a smile on her face as she thought about Vernon. It was November 4; Karen had been staying with her ever since the wake. That day, Karen said she wanted to stay in bed; she was tired, and her kidneys hurt.

There was a knock at the door. Thinking it was Vernon, Shalanna answered it. It was Victoria instead.

“Hey, Miss Thang. How are you?” Victoria asked.

“Hanging in there.”

“Good for you. You’re looking good,” Victoria said.

“Thanks, Vic. I’ve been working out. We joined Pro Fitness about two weeks ago. We go every day.”

Shalanna went into the kitchen to pour them a glass of wine.

“So where’s Mama?” Victoria asked, taking a sip.

“Sleeping, she sleeps all the time now. I try to get her out the bed, but she doesn’t move. I don’t know if it’s because she’s depressed or if she’s sick. I went to dialysis with her yesterday, and it’s not working for her so well. They said her creatinine level is high. Her dialysis isn’t cleaning out the blood properly, and her graft is infected.”

“So what are they going to do?” Victoria asked.

“Well, right now, the doctors are going to put in a new graft in her right arm. She has the procedure done tomorrow.”

Victoria shook her head. “How are you holding up?” she asked.

“I don’t know. I went to my doctor and had them put me on Celexa and Seroquel,” Shalanna said.

“On your own, you did that? I’m so proud of you,” Victoria said, giving Shalanna a hug.

“Well, Vernon helped a little. He convinced me I needed help. He said he didn’t want to see what happened to Terry happen to me.”

“So how is Vernon?” Victoria asked.

“Well, he complains his back has been hurting because we have to sleep on the couch. I gave Mama my bed, and I’ve been sleeping on the sofa bed in the living room, but other than that, he’s fine. He’s still mad I didn’t speak to Terry at the wake though. Terry didn’t speak to me,” Shalanna said, taking a sip of her wine.

“Uh-huh, so how is Terry?”

“Fine, I guess. My mom told me she was staying in a shelter. She doesn’t speak to me ever since she came by here and I dissed her. But what am I supposed to do? Deep down, I’m still scared of her. I’m too old to fight.”

“I understand; she did a lot to you growing up and over these last years. After she pulled that gun out on you, I thought that was it. I didn’t think you would have ever forgiven her. But you know she’s mentally ill,” Victoria said. “The whole town is talking about what happened at Rump Shakers. And why did she become a stripper? I mean, even if you need money, you don’t do something like that. Sharice has been going around telling everyone what happened at the club and why she got fired. I heard about it through Shakandra.”

Shalanna shook her head. She wasn’t embarrassed by what Terry had done, but she knew her mother was.
